Kathy and Brendan met when they lived in the same neighborhood in Brooklyn: Boerum Hill. They met in the Flying Saucer Cafe, where Kathy would go grade student exams all the time and Brendan was reading chemistry for a class he was taking at Hunter College in preparation for going to graduate school in the History of Science. The Flying Saucer is a very friendly place, full of people using it as a place to work and hang out to get out of their tiny New York apartments. So Kathy and Brendan struck up a conversation about five or six years ago, when Kathy first moved to the city to teach at Baruch College. But they were just friends and eventually Brendan left town and his job working as an investigator and supervisor for the New York Civilian Complaint Review Board to study at Yale. But two years ago, Brendan was back in town visiting and went back to his old haunt, the Saucer, for his usual iced coffee. Kathy stopped in for some java on her way out to buy her friend Teresa a birthday present. Since Brendan had some free time, he went with her, they had lunch, and got caught up. After this chance meeting, we started seeing each other. So even though we used to live literally around the block from each other, we had to wait until we lived two hours away to get together. We still hang out a lot in Boerum Hill, but now we split our time between the Brooklyn studio and the "country house" in Connecticut. Here's Kathy on Atlantic Avenue drinking our favorite brew from the Flying Saucer:
